G.B Smith of Edinburgh was the referee in front of an estimated crowd of 6,000. The Leeds substitutes were Kenny Burns and Aidan Butterworth, and Brian Flynn and Derek Parlane were unused, while Hearts had John Brough, Stewart MacLaren, John Robertson, Derek O'Connor and Gerry McCoy on the bench, but only Gerry McCoy was used and he replaced Willie Pettigrew. Arthur Graham started the game in lively fashion, making a dazling run in the opening minutes, but after leaving three Hearts defendes in his wake, his perfect cross looked goal-bound from the boot of Frank Worthington, before Roddy MacDonald appeared from nowhere to stop it from crossing the line. Trevor Cherry had to be alert to stop Willie Pettigrew who looked to capitalize on a mix-up between John Lukic and Paul Hart. The Leeds keeper showed his class when he tipped a twenty-five yard volley from Alex MacDonald over the top at full-stretch. On the half-hour mark Hearts took the lead courtesy of an own goal from Paul Hart, the Leeds Centre Half who inadvertently deflected a long range shot from the Hearts Full Back Peter Shields past his own keeper. Peter Marinello could have put the game beyond Leeds but he failed to connect with his shot in front of an open goal from just ten yards.
